RAID 6 Data Recovery Services

DataTech Labs® provides fast, professional RAID 6 data recovery services. Our expert recovery engineers will work around the clock to ensure that your critical data is retrieved as quickly as possible. We understand that each customer’s situation is unique, so we will analyze each hard drive in your RAID 6 array to determine the best recovery method for each of our clients.

RAID 6 Data Recovery Services

A RAID 6 array takes RAID 5 to the next level. Current controllers utilized for this array are more expensive so most of these are maintained by high level IT firms and companies. Instead of a single stripe of parity, a RAID 6 produces two stripes. In theory this means that any two hard drives in the array can fail at the same time and the data can still be reconstructed. There is an additional delay in writing to this array as the controller must calculate two sets of parity.

What is RAID 6?

RAID 6 has distributed parity like a RAID 5, but has an additional parity stripe dedicated to higher fault tolerance. This means that 2 drives could fail without data loss. There is a Jewel Parity meaning there are two disks space worth to rewrite across all disks, or dual parity. Single parity RAID levels are vulnerable to data loss until the failed drive is rebuilt: the larger the drive, the longer the rebuild will take. With dual parity, it gives time to rebuild the array without the data being volatile while the failed drive is being recovered.

This makes larger RAID groups more practical, especially for high availability systems. This becomes increasingly important because large-capacity drives lengthen the time needed to recover from the failure of a single drive.

Some typical scenarios that cause RAID 6 data loss include:

  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures Past Point of Redundancy
  • Errors During Rebuild
  • Damaged RAID Controller Card
  • Accidental Overwrites, Formatting or Partitioning
  • Re-initialization Resulting in Overwrite
  • File Corruption
  • Virus Damage
  • RAID 6 rebuild error
  • Fire, Smoke or Water Damage

Do not attempt to recover or replace failed system components. Make note of any error messages you notice and shut the array down immediately. Trying to reconfigure the array could lead to complications in recovery, or worse, permanent data loss.
